Welcome to a long overdue update on upcoming Photography for Knitters and MORE workshops.

TNNA-  The National Needlework Arts Association Summer Tradeshow June 10&11th 2016, Washington DC

If you are interested in expanding, improving, or  just starting to get your feet wet in social media, and you are a member of TNNA, consider joining me and Beverly Army Williams for the Better Business program, on Friday June 10th.  For participants, there is also an optional hands-on Lab workshop early Saturday morning.

We'll cover how to use your words and make the best images for the social media, how to maximize your efforts, how to build a following and keep customers coming back.  It's aimed at yarn shop owners,  and indie designer, dyer or yarn businesses but applicable to all. The workshops will include my popular  iPhone/Smartphone photo class, because you can make amazing images with your phone--and post it almost immediately.  Info here.

summer 2015 & beyond

I'm thrilled to be returning to two of my favorite Maker/Arts/Handcraft/Community Building venues to teach in the coming months.

July 31-August 1st at A Gathering of Stitches in Portland Maine

Samantha's put together 2 days of classes--one full day and two halves--that can stand alone, or if you want to immerse yourself, take'em all.  Full descriptions from this link.

• July 31st full day Photography for Makers  -- the full monte from camera basics to photo editing to a review of what we shoot--we'll be in a beautiful Cape Elizabeth home, so plan to leave with images that'll blow you away

• August 1 -PhotoEditing for Makers-- 1/2 day - Every image you see onine, in books, and exhibited has some photoeditng done to it.  If you feel like your images are just not as good as you want them to be starigh tout of camera, it is time for you to learn the tools and techniques to take them to a  another level. A few easy adjustments--and wow, We'll use a free online software--no photoshop needed.

• August 1st- Making iphone Masterpieces for Social Media--1/2 day  Exactly what it says in the title. We'll be photographing with our phones and using powerful but friendly apps to turn our cellphone photos into amazing images that'll grab eyeballs in your social media.  A workshop with a veryhigh immediate gratification score.

PS to non-locals: Portland Maine, and the area surrounding it, is fabulous to visit--I recommend making a long weekend of it.

MAKING ONLINE COLLAGES IN PICMONKEY  Monday Nov 24th at 1 pm eastern
As in  the Photo Editing webinar, it will be mostly be a hands-on live action demonstration of making collages online, starting from a simple diptych with two photos and a bit of text, moving up to customizing multi-image collages with text and textures & graphics,  optimized for Pinterest,  postcard mailing and websites. (and, of course, lots of tips and tricks  for working with your photos along the way).

Photo Editing Webinar LIVE Oct 22nd

Join me at 1 pm eastern (US)  Wednesday October 22nd for a live webinar from Interweave: Photo Editing for Knitters.  We are going to make your photos crazy good, and absolutely NO Photoshop is needed. We'll use free online software that is user friendly. And somewhat addictive. (don't say I didn't warn you). Register now.
If you can't be online for the live webcast, you can download it recorded, and not miss a word of it. The only differnce is , listening to it live enables you to type in questions, that a moderator will pass on to me at the end.  I am having a blast preparing it, from basic editing through adding text, graphics and making a collage.  Hope you can join in!

 

Rhinebeck! photoshoot: let's do it!

Oh BOY! It's time for the NY Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck NY. I'll be there from Friday Oct 17-Sunday October 19th- at the very least.
For the first time in years I'm neither teaching, nor bookhawking, nor doing a big photo project...which means I am available to do a photoshoot with you.  Interested ? 

I am accepting a limited number of photoshoots while we have the fabulous setting of the festival or the Hudson River Valley as our location.

Send me a note at [email protected] with what you are looking for, and I can give you a customized quote/proposal/plan. This worked out splendidly for 4 designers & yarn companies at TNNA. Why not? A very special PHOTOGRAPHY WEEKEND

at GATHERING OF STITCHES in PORTLAND MAINE  June 28-29th

This is going to be fun, and a little different. I'll be joining sewist, maker and owner Samantha Hoyt Lindgren at her fabulous maker space for textile and fiber artists  in the East Bayside neighborhood. It's  a full weekend of photography classes, perfect for anyone who loves photography, making, knitting, designing, or all of the above.You can take one, two, or all three of the workshops we put together.

Saturday will be a full day Photography for Knitters & Makers workshop. We'll talk, shoot, edit & end the day with time to review & critique images. An excellent one if you want to get out and shoot for the day, and take your photos to a new level. It's also a great class for designers/crafters who want to create specific images to market their work.

On Sunday I'm debuting two workshops: Photo Editing                                             and Mastering iPhone-ography . Details here.  All classes are limited

FIBER COLLEGE OF MAINE  SEPT 3-7TH 2014

I'm returning to one of my favorite haunts, Searsport Maine. I hate how the word unique is overused and misused in the creative world--but truly, Fiber College is a unique gathering. It'll be my 4th year, and it makes the bittersweet end to summer tilt toward sweet, each time.

-   all day Friday Savvy Storytelling writing +photography workshop with Beverly Army Williams, for anyone who wants to enliven their blog or website in and empowering way

- Saturday, a Photo Scavenger Hunt workshop. This is going to be so.much.fun. You'll learn tips and techniques to improve your photogrpahy while being challenged to seek images--this year the Gees Bend Quilters will be teaching, along with an amazing array of others and vendors, so we will have so much to shoot in this lovely and unique waterfront setting.

After a short intro talk & exercise to loosen up your camera/brain, we'll be heading out into the festival to use the wonderful sights & light & setting as our backdrop. You'll leave with a slew of new images , not to mention some new ideas of seeing/looking/using your camera to tell a story.

Good for all levels but please know how to use your camera, and how to change the exposure modes and turn off your flash.   DSLR, point & shoot and even iphones welcome.

Product Photography: Photographing Your FOs on Real People

Just what the title says: we'll be focussing on getting your knits & handcrafted creations to look great in photos, using real life people as your models. As always, hands-on, full of tips & techniques--and limited in size, so don't wait too long to sign up. (Must I say that of course we shall shoot sheep shots?)

I'm teaching the workshops 2 times that day: 9am-12 and also 2-5pm.

Why sit around talking about making great images when we can hit the road (feet first) and learn as we shoot ? With the charming village of Babylon NY as our setting, this class will be an active opportunity for you to work on improving your image making skills while photographing in “real life” settings. Gale will present a short intro talk and then we’ll head out to demonstrate techniques and photograph your knits or fiber in various settings. This will be an opportunity to learn about choosing photo settings, styling, backgrounds, reacting to locations and managing light as you find it. We will wrap up with a demonstration on photo editing & processing, using free online software that will put that finishing touch on your images, before they go out in the world to sing.

You've asked for it, I've wanted to offer it, and finally we can do this thang:  a Photography for Knitters & Crafters class that meets over 3 sessions, with assignments and time for critique/feedback of your work, as well as some photo editing .  Whether you want to improve your photography skills in general, or use this class format to work out some specific problems/blocks you've had in your photography, we'll have time  to look, learn, shoot and then look some more. As usual, we'll focus on yarn and knits, as we work with light, choose backgrounds, considering our options, colors and composition. Your photos willl sing! Register soon, space very limited.
